What is nest about this drive system is that you have a two speed. The gear box has Dual output shafts, one on each side of the gear case.
The low range is chain driven and uses a freewheel sprocket on adaptor. The adaptor is placed on the axle and this makes you 1st - low gear. You have a ton of pulling power to pull heavy loads up very steep hills or if you have to go off road the low range will give you the power to pull most any hill or load.
The unit will always be low until you shift it into the 2nd range - high.
The 2nd range uses a “V” belt drive. The pulley is attached to a freewheeling clutch, it’s attached to the adaptor to fit the axle.
Lift up on the lever to tighten up the belt, then the axle is turned at a higher ratio to give you the faster 2nd range.
The chain still turns, but it’s on a freewheel so the belt drive over runs it. Lower the lever to release the tension on the belt and your back in the low range.
The two speed system works GREAT and it allows a smaller engine size to be used and still pull the steep hills and / or a very heavy load up to 500+ lbs. The 2nd range is great for going faster on pavement.
